WHAT GUIDANCE CAN SUPPORT

A space to explore, develop and refine

Guidance can take many forms, depending on what you want to explore. This can include:

  • Learning the full process from scouring and mordanting to dyeing
  • Developing a specific colour palette
  • Working with particular dye plants or materials
  • Exploring pH, modifiers and colour adjustment
  • Integrating natural dyeing into your artistic practice
  • Developing natural colour for painting, textiles, installations or other disciplines
  • Troubleshooting and refining existing processes
  • Advice on materials, equipment and studio set-up
  • Developing or researching a particular project

Each session is tailored to your practice, interests and goals.

WHO IT IS FOR

Guidance for your practice

Guidance is for anyone who wants to deepen their knowledge and work more independently with natural colour.

This might include:

Artists and painters
Explore how botanical colour, pigments and dye processes can become part of an existing artistic practice.

Designers and textile makers
Develop colours, materials and processes for textile or design projects.

Students and emerging creatives
Build a stronger technical foundation or receive support with a particular project.

Brands and small businesses
Explore natural colour for products, materials or production, and understand what is realistically possible at different scales.

Educators
Develop your understanding of natural dye processes for teaching or educational projects.

Anyone with a specific project or question
You do not need to identify as an artist or designer. Guidance can simply be a way to investigate something you want to understand more deeply.

Sessions can take place at the atelier in Amsterdam or online, depending on what you would like to work on.

HOW IT WORKS

A process shaped around you

01 - Initial conversation

We discuss your interests, questions and goals and determine what would be most useful to explore.

02 - Tailored plan

Together we shape the content and format. This may be one focused session or a series of sessions following a project over time.

03 - Guidance

Sessions are practical and focused on your specific questions or project. Depending on what you are exploring, we can work hands-on with materials, dyes, samples or your own work.

04 - Integration

You leave with knowledge, references and practical next steps that allow you to continue experimenting and developing your practice independently.

YOUR QUESTIONS ARE THE STARTING POINT

What a session might look like

There is no fixed curriculum. A session might mean spending an afternoon learning how to properly scour, mordant and dye different fibres, developing a palette for an upcoming collection, troubleshooting colours that are not behaving as expected, or exploring how botanical colour could translate into another medium.

You are welcome to bring your own materials, samples, artworks, research or works in progress. We use these as a starting point and build the session around what would be most useful for you.

For more extensive projects, guidance can continue across several sessions so there is time to experiment between meetings and reflect on the results together.
